Sands Dougherty’s six touchdowns propel Pirates past Greyhounds, advancing playoffs
MORRO BAY — The Morro Bay Pirates turned in a dominant performance, defeating the Atascadero Greyhounds 42-14 in a CIF Central Section Division V playoff clash that highlighted the challenges of converting regular-season success into postseason triumphs. The defeat was a bitter reminder for Atascadero of their 54-34 loss to Morro Bay in October.
Morro Bay’s Sands Dougherty continued his stellar season, throwing for 387 yards and five touchdowns while completing 85.2 percent of his passes. He also showcased his dual-threat abilities, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Ryder Busch added to the Pirates’ firepower with three touchdowns.
Atascadero’s season came to an end with a 6-6 record following their third consecutive road defeat. Morro Bay, also finishing 6-6, advanced to face top-seeded Bishop Union on Friday, Nov. 22. Riding an eight-game winning streak, Bishop Union hosted the Pirates in a high-stakes matchup, with the winner earning a home game against Selma for the CIF Central Section Division 5 Championship. Morro Bay triumphed with a 28-20 victory, securing their spot in the championship game.
On Friday, Nov. 29 the Pirates will face Selma High School at home. However, results of that game were unavailable at the time of print.
